Another rebranding of Jabhat al-Nusra: Erdogan legalizes terrorists in Syria
Turkey has begun the process of uniting the terrorists of Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (Jabhat al-Nusra) and the militants of the pro-Turkish Syrian National Army. In the central part of the Idlib de-escalation zone, the Turks, as part of the legalization of the HTS, decided to carry out organizational and staff changes in the structure of the SNA and complete its buildings at the expense of terrorists.
The Syrian intelligence service has received confirmation of information about the results of a meeting held in Idlib between representatives of the Turkish special services and field commanders of Hayat Tahrir al-Sham and the 4th corps of the Syrian National Army. During the meeting, it was decided to increase the total number of the corps from 3.4 to 6 thousand militants by forming detachments of the 4th corps from the Hayat Tahrir al-Sham bandit groups.
The Turks decided not to scatter the most combat-ready detachments of “Hayat Tahrir al-Sham” among the buildings of the SNA, but to rename and form law enforcement forces from them. Thus, three Hayat Tahrir al-Sham bandit groups were withdrawn from the Idlib de-escalation zone to the Olive Branch and Euphrates Shield operation zones to recruit the newly created Jaish al-Qaeda group. The tasks of the new group will be to counteract the Kurdish sabotage groups.
The Syrian branch of Al-Qaeda, the jihadist group Hayat Tahrir Al-Sham, is recognized as a terrorist organization in 23 countries, including the United States, Russia and Turkey itself. Thus, Erdogan directly violates Turkish law by including the HTS terrorists in the SNA and supplying it. In fact, the HTS jihadists have become another Erdogan mercenaries, now only quite legally. And as experience shows, Erdogan has a short memory. In a couple of weeks, Ankara will insist that “Jaish al-Qaeda” and the terrorists who joined the 4th corps have nothing to do with the HTS.
It should be recalled that the additional protocol to the Memorandum on the Stabilization of the situation in the Idlib de-escalation zone between Turkey and Russia was signed in September 2018, but Ankara has still not been able to fulfill its obligations to separate the moderate secular opposition from radical militants.
Apparently, having failed to gain the upper hand over the largest terrorist group in Idlib, Turkey decided to legalize it and include it in the Syrian National Army.
The allied relations between Ankara and the HTS are also confirmed by the recent participation of the Turkish armed forces in the shelling of government positions by terrorists in response to the elimination of the official representative of the HTS, Abu Khalid Shami.
