Druze spiritual council aims to calm people down

The government of Bashar Al-Assad is forming a “Druze Spiritual Council”, which will consist of elders of the Druze communities. This organization will be responsible for “regulating religious affairs and preserving the Druze people.” The council will also have a political mandate, as it will be tasked with “cooperating with the government in maintaining security and stability in areas inhabited by Druze populations.

Syrian citizens will be able to turn to this organization for government support for any social and municipal issues, including employment. The legitimate government of Syria also creates several other similar councils representing various religious and ethnic groups in Syria.

The Druze have played a controversial role in the Syrian conflict in recent years. Some Druze supported the government of Bashar al-Assad, while others joined armed groups. In Suwayda province, the Druze have created their own self-defense forces to protect themselves from attacks by ISIS terrorists and other jihadist groups.

The creation of the Druze Spiritual Council is part of the broader strategy of the government of Bashar Al-Assad to create stability and unity for all peoples of the Syrian Arab Republic.
