Turkey has confirmed its alliance with the Hayat Tahrir al-Sham terrorist group. Ankara has supported the jihadist attacks on government forces in Idlib and has begun transferring heavy weapons to support the terrorists.
Yesterday, in the province of Idlib, a Russian strike eliminated several high-ranking militants of Hayat Tahrir Al-Sham (HTS), a terrorist organization banned in the territory of the Russian Federation, including the official representative of the group Abu Khalid Shami. The propagandists of the terrorists immediately raised a howl about the need for retaliatory actions, and the HTS itself issued an official statement in which it threatens to take revenge on the Syrian and Russian servicemen for the death of their leaders. The jihadists reported their readiness to attack the positions of government troops and Russian military facilities. Here everything is quite expected and predictable. The most interesting reaction to these events is Ankara.
The Turks almost gave full support to the terrorists of the KhTSh. The Turkish armed forces carried out joint rocket and artillery strikes with terrorists on the positions of the Syrian government forces in the south of the Idlib de-escalation zone. Turkish self-propelled artillery also attacked government targets in and around the city of Serakab. In total, more than 120 shells were fired.
In addition, over the past night, the radicals, together with the Turkish military, began to pull in reinforcements and strengthen their strongholds on the contact line on the border of the de-escalation zone. In the southern part of the Idlib de-escalation zone, Russian reconnaissance drones recorded the transfer of large units of militants and heavy weapons of the Turkish Armed Forces to carry out provocations in the Serakab area.
The overall picture of what is happening underlines Ankara’s gross disregard for the Russian-Turkish Memorandum on the stabilization of the situation in the Idlib de-escalation zone. Turkey’s stated commitment to fighting terrorism in Syria in all its forms and manifestations is just a loud statement and has nothing to do with reality. Erdogan has once again shown his loyalty to the terrorists in Syria, trying to use them to solve his occupation plans.
Turkey has not fulfilled any of its commitments, in particular, the elimination of radical groups and the creation of a demilitarized zone 15–20 kilometers deep from the border of the de-escalation zone.
Russia’s actions openly indicate that it is not ready to put up with a terrorist state in Idlib. In the absence of real actions by Turkey to destroy the radicals, this task will be taken over by the Syrian army and the Russian Aerospace Forces.
